About Every Damn Free Tool & Resource Out There for Writers

Every job or hobby needs tools to work more efficiently and comfortably. Writers can have a variety from tools. In this day in age the majority is in the digital form, but many still choose to use old-fashioned ones like pen and paper. Today I’m going to cover the best free ones that I’ve come across. Later, we’ll be featuring the best paid ones.

I am going to try my hardest to keep this list updated. If you notice any free tool that’s not listed, be sure to contact me so I can update this post and list it. The following things will also be put in categories.

A note on tools: remember that you are a writer. Your main job is to create stories from your head. So please for the sake of your writing, don’t get so caught up in tools that they distract you from writing. Good tools are the ones that enhance your writing or make you more productive. So if a tool is not doing that, then it’s no longer useful.

Evernote

This is by far the most used tool I (the CEO) have used in my writing. I use it every day and not just for writing either. This draft of the blog post is written in here. It syncs phones, the web, and every other Evernote application you have. It’s interface is sleek and beautiful and you get a lot for free. There blog also is jam packed with interesting ways to use their product.

I write any new ideas that come into my head. It’s where I put my story bibles, since going minimalist I’ve stopped printing them and just keep them digitally. 🐘

Walks

I know you were expecting digital tools here, but I just had to include walks. Walks are great because whenever I run into a problem I put my headphones in or just enjoy the silence and go for a walk. Normally at the end of the walk I’ve figured out the problem and bustle home to write down any ideas. And plus the great thing about them is they’re free, you only need your legs or your wheelchair. 👟

Generators

These are seriously the best if you’ve run out of ideas. There are generators for nearly everything out there: band names, character names, setting locations, etc. Listed below are a few of my favorites. 🔀

Name Berry

This is the #1 site to get good character names. Yes, it’s a baby name site. So far, I can’t find a name site that is just for writers. Seriously though, someone make one because this looks weird on my search engine history. 😂

Word Hippo

Thesaurus mainly, but it also: translates, is a dictionary, and much more. I also really enjoy the cute branding. It is a site I use frequently. ✒️

Write or Die 3

This is for the writer who likes to live on the dangerous side. You can adjust the settings to make it to where if you don’t write a certain number of words, it’ll start to delete your progress. I’ve heard of many writers who use this and find it to help them pump that word count up. ☠️

Freewriting or Morning Pages

This isn’t your pure time of writing the rough draft or plotting. This is just getting any random ideas floating around out of your brain and onto paper where it should be. It doesn’t just have to be strictly writing related ideas but anything really. Read a blog post here to find out more on free writing or watch this video on morning pages here. 🖊️

Trello

This is another favorite tool of mine. It uses the Japanese Kaban method. You can organize things from submissions, outline, characters, and many ways. It really can be endless for what you want to use Trello for! I mainly use it as a place to house ideas and to-do lists. 🇯🇵

Face Claim Directory

Another tool used frequently is this one. While it’s not currently being updated, the old posts are still up. You can organize celebrity faces to find one that looks similar to your character. This one has been a life saver a few times when googling “girl brown hair blue eyes” doesn’t cut it. Sadly it's no longer updated but still a good resource. (Wink, wink to someone needing to make an alternative) 🤗

Meditation

In my 12 Self-Care Ideas for Writers post I mentioned meditation. It can be a powerful tool to kick out all the thoughts about anything other than writing and to hone in on your current project at hand. I try to meditate every morning before writing and before sleeping to ease into a sense of calm. 🧠

This website is an advanced search tool to learn about basically anything. They also have a collection of web applications that can be useful in research. 🔍

Spotify

Spotify is a application on either your computer or phone that can stream music and be kept in playlists. I love using them for my story’s playlists and to just listen to music in general. The recommendations are also great as well and pretty on point. 🎼

If you’re a project management tool junkie then you’ll know what I’m talking about here. This website gets compared to Trello and Evernote a lot. This tool is perfect for those who are writing non-fiction and need to keep track of deadlines. ✅

Apache Open Office

This is like the free version of Word, while still keeping a lot of features and having a few that Word doesn’t have. The company updates this open source software regularly. Besides a word processor they have the following: Calc, Impress, Draw, Base, and Math. 📄

Hemingway Editor

Is an online editing app that offers an array of things to look for. While there’s a time and place for editing your novels, this can also be a good tool for editing blog posts if you don’t quite have a trained eye for mistakes. ✍️

Brainstorming or Mind Maps

Earlier we mentioned digital mind maps, but this one is with the ole pen and paper combo. Sometimes disconnecting from the screen can increase the creativity level in ideas or just the number of ideas in general. So find a nice quiet space and get to thinking up of new ideas or mapping out already existing ones! This blog post here can help you with brainstorming or if you want to learn how to mind map click here. 📝

Grammarly

I prefer this one over Hemingway just because you can download it and use it offline and also store your drafts on there (though I recommend against that). It’s a beautifully sleek tool and for what you get for free is pretty decent. 📓

Our Minor Character Template Sheet

Grab a free download! Need to write down information on your minor characters? Use this quick and handy template sheet for each one! You can digitally type in your answers to this sheet. 🤓

We will be soon releasing a main character template worksheet in our Etsy store so keep on the look out for that!

Blogger

Need an author blog or website? Blogger is perfect if you don’t want to invest anything for Squarespace or have the learning curve to learn Wordpress. While Blogger finally added some fresher more modern themes, there are some good cheap themes on Etsy and Creativemarket. I’d heavily advise against any Georgia Lou Studios themes, as I’ve had terrible experience with them trying to set this blog up with their themes. Click here to see a blogger theme shop I enjoy. 💻

Google Earth

I’ve used this one several times for a project in the past. It gave me a sense of where I was writing about without having to go there. No doubt, I still want to go there when I get the funds (I think like most writers do). 🌎

The Library

While it isn’t a digital tool you can have on your smartphone (unless you count Overdrive or Libby) but the library is always free to get research books or documentaries. I swear I can never leave the library without more than three or four books. 📚

Pinterest

Be wary, as this can also be a time trap. So use this tool wisely. I use it for story boards of my novels. I’ve garnered several new ideas just by following certain aesthetically designed boards that produce new content in my feed. It’s also a great place to find blog posts on writing. 📌
