#1 Read Writing Prompts

I really don’t know of a single writer who doesn’t love writing prompts. While the traditional ones come in a format like the one below, prompts can also come from aesthetically pleasing images like the ones I pin on Pinterest. There’s plenty of blogs that supply traditional writing prompts like this one. Some other ideas include: buying a box of old photos, going to an art museum, browsing through Pinterest, and getting into some new scenery around yourself. Just be sure to keep a notebook near yourself for when inspiration strikes.

#2 Have an Adventure

We can pull stories from our very own life. So it’s important to make sure we get out of our writing nooks and libraries and get outside and do something crazy that we’ll never forget and that we can end up putting in fiction in some form. To think of ideas for adventures just think of what would go beyond your comfort zone while still being safe and lawful and do it.

#3 Eavesdrop

Go to a cafe, a store, and listen in on people’s loud conversations about their problems or stories of their own. Sometimes you will hear the weirdest things that will cause a spark to go off in your brain.

#4 Watch a Documentary

Documentaries are a great way for us to gain more on a subject or pull us back into the past. Watch documentaries on things you normally write about (for example a history one if you write historical fiction) and also one that you normally wouldn’t pick. Netflix and Youtube are great places to start watching some.

#5 Research the Past

Dig into old journals. Watch classic movies. Interview war veterans. Read about little known historical events. Research your own genealogy. Listen to old music. Dress in vintage clothes. Buy an antique and write a short piece on its story.

Seek out someone who has an interesting story. It doesn’t need to be face to face either but you can video chat or email besides meeting up for a coffee. Create a list of questions if you want to go a certain direction otherwise just let it unfold organically.

#7 Go on an Artist Date

Grab a sketchbook and pen and head outside to a pretty and quiet place. Brainstorm or mind map all your ideas you have floating around in your head. You can also listen to some music or bring another creative activity to do as well like photography.

#8 Clear Your Head

Try some meditation. Journal all your emotions out onto paper. Talk to a therapist. Sing it out.

#9 Take Some Self-Care

Put your feet up. Read a book for fun. Take care of your skin and health. Take that much needed nap. Organize your writing life. Take a big look at how you want your writing career to look like. Recharge your mind and spirit.

#10 Look in the Mirror

What are stories you need to tell about yourself? What are fears you need to overcome? What challenges do you need to try harder at achieving.

#11 Retell Something

Take an existing story and twist it up as your own. Many people do this with fairytales and most are successful. Don’t worry about originality because your spin will be like no one else’s. Mesh fact with fiction. Get inspired by a poem or a song and turn it into a short story or novel.

#12 Listen to New Music

There’s nothing like some new tunes to jam to. Music is a pathway to the soul. So any new music that makes your head bop could possibly spark a little something inside in your mind that can keep growing.
